soft-rayed
a group of fishes distinguished from the spiny-rayed fishes (Acanthopterygii) by lacking true spines in the dorsal, anal and pelvic fins, among other characters. Includes herrings, carps, eels, etc.Once known scientifically as the Malacopterygii a term not now in general use. A convenient designation for those lower fishes lacking spines
